Milenko Katic

Biography

Milenko Kati? was born in Yugoslavia and grew up in Belgrade. As a young man he studied medicine for three years until he began to associate with artists in Belgrade and discovered that he could no longer resist art as a career. He stopped medical school and took classes at a drawing school with Sergej Jovanovi? in Belgrade and at painting school with Mili? In Belgrade, he exhibited paintings that were in a surrealistic style with tempora on board and canvas, influenced by Salvador Dali and his teacher Mili? de Machva.

In 1984, Milenko moved to the Adriatic coast in beautiful, medieval, historic city of Dubrovnik, where he painted and exhibited extensively until 1989 when he moved to Charlottesville, Virginia, USA and opened Milenko Art Studio. Later in 2007, Milenko and his wife Tanya Tyree, a ceramic artist, moved to Afton, VA and together established 2 Art Studios LLC. As an artist, Milenko is inspired by ancient art (caves, artifacts and coins). He enjoys creating ancient coin jewelry.

“My primary interest is to create drawings of figures that express the mood and character of the subject. I use simplified lines and shapes to emphasize movement and feeling. Most of my work is gesture drawings of horses, people and birds. I use a variety of media to draw. Working on board and canvas with Caran d'Ache crayon, pencil, sumi ink, acrylic, mixed media and creating sculptures in clay. My goal is to make fresh and expressive drawings that depict the atmosphere I perceive from my subjects.”
