Peter Sculthorpe

Biography

Peter Sculthorpe's paintings capture the rural landscape and stone architecture of the Brandywine Valley in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Sculthorpe's paintings are instantly recognizable for their beautiful stone barns, dusky skies and single figures on horseback. Using the demanding medium of watercolor, he manipulates light and form, giving his paintings a dramatic, natural feeling. As inspiration, the artist explores a variety of other media including etching, monotype and stone lithography, and incorporates these elements into his work.

Sculthorpe has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the American Artist Professional League Award, Philadelphia Sketch Club Silver Medal and First Prize in oil painting from the National Arts League, New York. His work is included in the public collections of the Springfield Art Museum in Missouri, the Delaware Art Museum, The Brandywine River Museum in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, and the DuPont Company in Japan.
