Charles was raised in Thousand Oaks, California. He served in the US Navy on board the USS Mobile as an engineering electrician, and later acquired his Bachelor of Arts degree in Industrial Scientific Photography at the Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara California. He won the Karsh Fellowship, and upon graduation, he moved to Canada to work with Yousuf Karsh for two years at his studio in Ottawa, Ontario. After completing the two-year fellowship, he continued to work with Karsh for an additional 7 years, assisting in the studio and on location sittings as well as processing negatives and finishing prints. After the Karsh studio closed, he pursued his own photographic career on a full time basis. For the past 20 years he has worked as a photographer. His work has been shown in Galleries in Canada as well as private collections throughout North America.
